Phonics Enrichment

At Emmanuel Community School, our daily phonics lessons are taught in enjoyable and engaging ways. All of our phonics teachers are fully trained in delivering phonics lessons. Teachers receive regular training to keep up to date with the teaching of early reading. Phonics teachers also assess children in reading daily by listening to them read during sessions and supporting them when needed. Children in Year 2 and KS2, who need further support in reading may still access phonics through boosters to improve fluency.

Students visit the school library regularly to borrow books to develop a pleasure for reading. At Emmanuel Community School. Students learning phonics receive a levelled phonics receive a levelled phonics book to take home and read. All teachers, support staff and the senior leadership team read with children every day.

There are many ways Emmanuel Community School can enhance learning at home. We send specific videos of sounds that children need to relearn for homework. Children also receive phonics homework and we have reading workshops for parents.

Read Write Inc Phonics

At Emmanuel Community School children learn to read with Read Write Inc. Phonics, a very popular and successful literacy programme.

Intent

We strive for ambitious, literate pupils who can problem solve; articulate themselves confidently and show resilience.

The systematic teaching of phonics has a high priority throughout Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. At Emmanuel Community School, we value reading as a key life skill and are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong readers. We also value and encourage the pupils to read for enjoyment and recognise that this starts with the foundations of acquiring letter sounds, segmenting and blending skills.

Implementation

Through the teaching of Read Write Inc the children are taught the essential skills needed for reading.

Phonics is taught daily to all children in Foundation Stage, and Year 1 . Extra support is provided to those who have not passed the phonics screening check in Year 1 and interventions are planned for those children who are working below expected levels. This is provided daily through one-one tutoring and an afternoon phonics booster.

Staff systematically teach learners the relationship between sounds and the written spelling patterns, or graphemes, which represent them. Phonics is delivered in small ability groups so that RWI teachers can work with children at the same level. This allows complete participation in lessons embedding the process in a rich literacy environment for early readers.

The reading leader regularly assesses the pupil’s phonics knowledge using the phonics assessment. These regular assessments inform planning and allow teachers to identify any gaps in learning.

The children have RWI books, which match their current phonics level, which they are encouraged to read daily at home and school.

Impact

Through the teaching of systematic phonics, our aim is for children to become fluent readers by the end of Key Stage One. This way, children can focus on developing their comprehension as they move through the school.

Attainment in reading is measured using the statutory assessments at the end of Key Stage One and Two. These results are measured against the reading attainment of children nationally. Attainment in phonics is measured by the Phonics Screening Test at the end of Year 1. However, we firmly believe that reading is the key to all learning and so the impact of our reading curriculum goes beyond the results of the statutory assessments.

Your child will learn to read in a very simple way. He or she will learn to:

  1. Read letters by their ‘sounds’
  2. Blend these sounds into words
  3. Read the words in a story

Read Write Inc. Phonics is a method of teaching reading and writing, which is centered around learning the sounds of the letters (phonics) and then blending them together to read words. The children also learn to break down words into individual sounds in order to write them.

When using RWI to read the children will:

  • Learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into understanding what they read.
  • Learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts.
  • Learn to read words using Fred Talk.
  • Learn to read words by blending the sounds together.
  • Read lively stories featuring words they have learnt to sound out.
  • Show that they understand the stories by answering ‘Find It’ and ‘Prove it’ discussion questions.

When using RWI to spell the children will:

  • Spell effortlessly so that they can put their energy into working out what they
    want to write.
  • Learn to write the letters/letter groups which represent the 44 sounds
    (graphemes).
  • Learn to write words by saying the sounds in Fred Talk.

Blending

Children learn to read words by blending the letter sounds that are in the Speed Sound sets. Help your child learn to read words by sound-blending e.g. c-a-t = cat. Help children to say the pure sounds, as quickly as they can and then to blend the sounds together to say the whole word.
